Q&A with landscape architect Nick Ison
What was your vision for Solana’s outdoor spaces?
Our vision was to create outdoor spaces that feel intimate, green, and connected to Solana’s leafy Bellevue Hill setting. Birriga Road already has a quiet, settled vibe, and we wanted the landscape to carry that feeling the moment you step in. The spaces are calm, refined, and designed to feel like a natural extension of a boutique home. Soft planting, warm sandstone, and small pause spots make the landscape feel like a retreat.
How does the landscaping enhance residents’ daily lifestyle?
We wanted the landscape to work for everyday life: simple, human, and easy to enjoy. Ground-floor gardens and courtyards are lush, sheltered, and genuinely usable. Upstairs, deep planters and balcony greenery ensure every home has a view of nature. The arrival experience is softened with layers of planting and natural materials, so coming home feels calm and welcoming. It’s those everyday moments—morning coffee, stepping in after a long day, opening the balcony doors—that we designed for from the start.
Can you talk us through your plant selection and design choices?
Our planting palette balances beauty and practicality. Ground-level shade-tolerant plants like Aspidistra, Xanadu, and Alpinia create calming, layered greenery, while Magnolia and Lilly Pilly add structure and seasonal interest. Upper-level sunnier areas feature sculptural, tough species like Agave, Blue Chalksticks, Myoporum, and Rosemary. The overall effect is a cohesive, year-round palette: lush where it matters, architectural where it counts, and low-maintenance throughout.
How does Solana’s landscaping create a sense of privacy and exclusivity?
Our planting palette balances beauty and practicality. Ground-level shade-Privacy here comes from a mix of structure and subtlety. Deep soil planters, layered greenery, and well-placed trees screen homes from the street without feeling boxed in. Private courtyards and balcony planters give each home its own garden moment. Exclusivity emerges through thoughtful details—the boutique scale of planting, the warmth of sandstone, and carefully chosen materials—making the building feel not just designed but genuinely cared for.
